Fire Extinguisher Servicing & Testing
Fire extinguisher servicing is essential and is documented in BS 5306. It is vital that they work when they are needed. The British Standards – which provide guidelines for fire safety – state that annual maintenance of fire protection equipment, including fire extinguishers, must be carried out by a competent person. Fire extinguishers require an annual inspection from a competent person to British Standard 5306 Part 3.
How Often Should a Fire Extinguisher Be Serviced?
It is known as ‘basic service’ to have your fire extinguishers serviced every 12 months, and needs to be done in accordance with BS 5306. We would always advise fire extinguisher servicing to be done by trained professionals so it can be carried out in the safest and most efficient way possible, keeping you and your business safe in the event of an emergency.
After this service has taken place, you will then be expected to carry out regular monthly checks to ensure that the extinguisher is in good working order. A monthly check should take no time at all, as all you will have to do is check the overall condition of the fire extinguisher, its current pressure gauge and its headcap pin and seal. Who Should Maintain Fire Extinguishers?
According to the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order, fire extinguishers that are in commercial properties or places that are required by law to have a fire extinguisher need to be carried out every 12 months by an able and competent person.
This person will need to be able to properly check the fire extinguisher to ensure that it is in good condition and will work effectively in the event of an emergency. That essentially means it should be carried out by someone who has received the correct tools, training and experience needed to thoroughly check and test the fire extinguisher systems.
Does a Fire Extinguisher Expire?
Many popular fire extinguisher manufacturers say that their extinguishers should last anywhere between 5 to 15 years depending on the maintenance and care they have received throughout their lifetime. Fire extinguishers will certainly not last a lifetime, and nor should they. They are intended to keep people in commercial and private properties safe.
Fire extinguishers should be checked and replaced as often as you can to ensure that your business’ safety regulations are continuously effective for a lifetime.
What To Expect from Fire Extinguisher Servicing
We make fire extinguisher servicing easy for you in a way that doesn’t disrupt your daily operations. Depending on the type of fire extinguisher you have, our engineers will generally carry out the following:
- Checking every part of the fire extinguisher for ware or damage, this includes: safety devices, valves, operating mechanisms and gauges
- Checking externally and internally for any corrosion
- Checking that the weight of the fire extinguisher is within the appropriate range
- Producing a ‘Certificate of inspection’, a legal document to be carried out on the fire extinguishers that will be kept and stored by both the engineers and yourself to ensure you are complying with regulations
Once the technician has completed the service, they will discuss any further work required with you on the day.
