How Often Should a Fire Extinguisher Be Serviced?

It is known as ‘basic service’ to have your fire extinguishers serviced every 12 months, and needs to be done in accordance with BS 5306. After this service has taken place, you will then be expected to carry out regular monthly checks to ensure that the extinguisher is in good working order. Who Should Maintain Fire Extinguishers?

According to the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order, fire extinguishers that are in commercial properties or places that are required by law to have a fire extinguisher need to be carried out every 12 months by an able and competent person. 

This person will need to be able to properly check the fire extinguisher to ensure that it is in good condition and will work effectively in the event of an emergency. That essentially means it should be carried out by someone who has received the correct tools, training and experience needed to thoroughly check and test the fire extinguisher systems. 

Does a Fire Extinguisher Expire?

Many popular fire extinguisher manufacturers say that their extinguishers should last anywhere between 5 to 15 years depending on the maintenance and care they have received throughout their lifetime. Fire extinguishers will certainly not last a lifetime, and nor should they. They are intended to keep people in commercial and private properties safe.
